Google Launches Android Wear, a Platform for Wearables

Last week Google announced an update to the Android platform built specifically for wearables called Android Wear.

A number of vendors have already announced they will be developing smartwatches on the platform, including Motorola's below.

Android Wear

This announcement is not a huge surprise if you've been following Google's recent strategic moves, most notably their acquisition of connected products company, Nest. I see this announcement as another move in the direction of positioning Android as a platform for all connected devices, not just wearables or smartphones.

Android has positioned itself in a very key strategic position with this announcement. Imagine a world where everything from your thermostat, stove, and fridge to your smartphone, watch, and car are connected devices built on the Android platform. Being an open platform, Android has made it easy to position itself as the conglomerate for all connected products just as GE became the conglomerate for everything related to electrical engineering.
